I've never considered myself a birder, but after this weekend that may have changed. We were camping at Totogatic Park near Minong, Wisconsin. We were in a new section, which they opened recently just west of the original campsites.

We were playing bags, when my daughter got distracted. She gasped and pointed and said look out for the baby bird! Sure enough, there was a fledgling that had just left it's nest. We weren't sure if the baby fell out of the nest or was trying to fly. Like I said, I'm not a birder.

We quickly noticed another one. They were hopping around and coming close to us. We backed up our chairs and tried to give them space, but they kept hopping towards us. Their mother flew in a couple of times to feed them berries, right in front of us.

At one point, one of the birds just hopped right on my friend Cathy's feet! They huddled under our camp chairs for the rest of the afternoon.

Later, at night, the fledglings hopped their way up to our camper and spent the night on our stabilizer jacks.

The next morning, we needed to leave the campground, but sure enough the fledglings were still there. My wife carefully took a stick and was able to get them to hop on the stick. She placed the baby birds in a nearby bush.

We continued to pack up the camper, and I hooked it up to the truck when I heard the baby birds again. I came around to our outdoor kitchen and saw that they had made their way under the sink.

The baby bird looked at me with it's mouth open expecting me to feed it or something? We moved the birds again, and this time one of them actually started to fly off!

What were these birds? Well, if you are a birder, feel free to let me know. I did a google image search and what I came up with was the Cedar Waxwing. That makes since because they are a pretty common bird, and in the Northern United States (like Wisconsin), the birds don't nest until the middle of June. That would have timed out about right for the fledglings to leave the nest 14-18 days later.

When did I start caring about birds? Oh no, it happened. I've gotten older.
