“Impactful and Hazardous” Winter Storm Targeting Southeast Minnesota, Northeast Iowa & Southwest Wisconsin
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- A potentially “impactful and hazardous” winter storm is set to arrive in southeastern Minnesota, northern Iowa and southwestern Wisconsin Monday night.
That’s according to the National Weather Service. The agency has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Storm Watch that covers most of southeast Minnesota.
Areas predicted to see the most severe impacts from the storm are Fillmore and Houston Counties in Minnesota along with communities in northeast Iowa and southwestern Wisconsin.
A Winter Storm warning issued for those communities indicates the storm could produce multiple inches of snow with hourly snowfall accumulation rates as high as 1-2 inches per hour.
The agency issued a Winter Storm Watch for Rochester Monday morning. The watch area also includes communities in Dodge, Mower, Olmsted, Wabasha and Winona Counties in southeastern Minnesota.
Snowfall predictions in the warning area range from 4-12 inches while people living in the watch area could see 2-8 inches of accumulating snow. The snowfall is predicted to be accompanied by 40 mph winds that are set to pick up Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night.
The newly fallen snow and strong winds are expected to create blowing and drifting snow in open areas, the warning says. Forecasters say the storm track could still shift north to areas along Interstate 90.
The Winter Storm Warning begins at midnight on Tuesday and is scheduled to expire at 6 a.m. Wednesday. The Winter Storm Watch takes effect at midnight on Tuesday and is set to last until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
