Rochester Murder Suspect Arraigned on New Fentanyl Charges

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The man charged with a fatal shooting in Rochester last summer was formally arraigned today in Olmsted County Court on charges involving alleged sales of fentanyl.

New Drug Charges Filed While Murder Case Is Pending

Thirty-two-year-old Ibrahim Abukaar Abdi faces one count each of first-degree drug sales and possession. He is currently in custody in the Olmsted County Jail, with his bail in the new drug case set at $500,000.

Police Seized Nearly 33 Grams of Suspected Fentanyl

According to the criminal complaint, Rochester police executed a search warrant at an apartment in the 500 block of Northern Hills Drive Northeast on August 12. The court document says the search resulted in the seizure of two packages of suspected fentanyl that weighed nearly 33 grams. Investigators also reported finding a digital scale and unused plastic bags.

Witness Describes Alleged Fentanyl Sales

A resident of the apartment spoke with detectives and, according to the criminal complaint, claimed that she did not know that there was fentanyl in her residence, but had seen Abdi and his associates use the kitchen area to "weigh, package, and distribute fentanyl." The witness also stated that she had seen Abdi sell drugs to approximately seven people during the previous two to three weeks.

Charged Last Year With Fatal Shooting

Abdi was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, one count of second-degree assault, and illegal possession of a firearm last July in connection with the death of 35-year-old Sadik Yusuf. Rochester police reported that the victim died on July 3, 2025, after he was shot in the neck outside the Villages at Essex Park apartment complex in northwest Rochester.

The criminal complaint says a witness told investigators that he saw Abdi pull out a gun and shoot Yusuf during a confrontation "over money and disrespect." The witness reported that the shooting occurred after he saw Yusuf take a bag of marijuana from Abdi.

Released After Posting $1 Million Bond

Abdi was released from the Olmsted County Jail in May of this year after he posted a $1 million bond. Since then, Olmsted County Court records show that he has been charged with third-degree drug sales involving the sale of 2.6 grams of fentanyl to a confidential informant working with Rochester police. He was also charged with felony DWI and drug possession in connection with an August 8 traffic stop.

Prosecutors Cite Public Safety Concerns

His arrest on those charges prompted Olmsted County prosecutors to ask the presiding judge to hold a hearing to review Abdi's conditions of release on bail. That hearing, which is now scheduled for Thursday, was delayed twice and prompted a letter from the Olmsted County Attorney's Office to the judge concerning the difficulties in scheduling the hearing. In the letter, prosecutors stated that Abdi presents a significant public safety risk.
