La Crosse Man Crashing into Vehicles on Hwy. 52 Captured After Driving into Zumbro River

Zumbrota, MN (KROC-AM News)- A fleeing motorist is in custody after they crashed into the Zumbro River in southeast Minnesota.

That’s according to a news release issued by the Zumbrota Police Department. 

Law enforcement began their response to the ordeal shortly before midnight Friday night. Police indicate the suspect had a gun in the vehicle he was driving.

Pursuit of La Crosse Man Crashing into Drivers on Hwy. 52 Ends in North Fork of Zumbro River

911 callers reported a southbound pickup was crashing into vehicles on Hwy. 52 while traveling south on the highway. The calls originated from the area of the Hwy. 57 interchange, which is about nine miles north of Zumbrota. 

Officers located the suspect vehicle about four miles north of Zumbrota in the area of the Sherwood Trail.

Police attempted a traffic stop but the suspect motorist continued driving, the news release says. 

Fleeing Driver Enters River

The suspect then entered a grassy median and continued down an embankment into the North Fork of the Zumbro River, which is on the northern edge of the Goodhue County community. 

Officers took the driver into custody without incident after the vehicle became stuck, according to the news release. 

Authorities are describing the driver as a 31-year-old man from La Crosse. His name has not been released.

He was arrested on suspicion of DUI, felony fleeing, hit and run and possession of a firearm under the influence of alcohol. 

No injuries were reported.
