Egg prices are going up again and there are egg shortages all over Minnesota. This is all due to the bird flu that has been wreaking havoc across the country.

But something that I didn't consider until a listener brought it up is that, in some cases, you can buy local eggs from local farmers for close to the same price or cheaper than grocery stores right now.

Egg Prices in Minnesota Right Now

I did a bit of research to do some price comparisons between stores in southeast Minnesota to see just how expensive eggs are at the moment. I looked at the big ones that I could think of in the area and compared prices for the store's brand, 12-count eggs.

Cub - Cub brand 12 count: $6.99

HyVee - HyVee brand 12 count: $5.98

Fareway - Country Daybreak 12 count: $5.99

Walmart - Great Value 12 count: $5.46

And like I mentioned, stores are having a hard time keeping eggs on shelves, including at Target.

Buy Eggs Locally and Support Local Farmers

Buying local eggs is a better option in general. Yes, the cost may be about the same at the moment as buying from a grocery store but there are plenty of other benefits too.

First of all, you're supporting a local farmer, which is awesome. Your money is going directly to the farmer who raised the chickens, not the big-box store.

Second, farm-fresh eggs tend to last longer than store-bought, so the hard-earned money you spent on them won't go to waste if they're in your fridge a bit longer than you planned.
