Man Sentenced to Prison For Knife Attack in Rochester

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man has been given a 31-month prison sentence for assault and burglary convictions.

31-year-old Ivan Gonzalez was sentenced Thursday after previously entering Alford pleas to second-degree assault and second-degree burglary charges. That means he doesn’t admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him. The convictions involve separate incidents that occurred over the span of less than a week in June.

On the night of June 17th was accused of slashing another man with a knife in the parking lot of an entertainment business along North Broadway. Rochester police reported the victim and another man had gone to the business to confront Gonzalez after they saw him steal a bag of tools outside a northeast Rochester residence earlier that evening. The victim of the knife attack, which was witnessed by an employee of the entertainment business, was treated for wounds on his arm and leg.

Four days later, Gonzalez allegedly broke into a residence in southwest Rochester and stole a mobile device from one of the renters. The criminal complaint notes the victim's ex-girlfriend was dating Gonzalez. a security camera video provided to police by the owner of the property shows Gonzalez entering the residence through a window before going to a nearby door and allowing another man to enter the home. The sound of a door being kicked in can be heard on the recording along with the sounds of a verbal confrontation before Gonzalez and the other man left the house.

The court records indicate Gonzalez was arrested the next day after he was found sleeping in his girlfriend's car in southeast Rochester. The documents also state that Gonzalez and his girlfriend had a history of domestic violence and he was under a Domestic Abuse Do Not Contact order at the time.
