Massive Winter Event Ends 7-Year Run in St. Paul
Rumors began circulating about a month ago, but now it's official: Red Bull Crashed Ice will not return to St. Paul this year after the city has hosted the event for an incredible seven year run.
Organizers announced Wednesday that the event will move to Boston’s Fenway Park in February instead, while also hosting events overseas in Japan and Finland as well.
The event, which first came to St. Paul in 2011, was a huge tourist draw for fans and families alike in the winter. For those not familiar with Crashed Ice, a 1,600-foot-long track would be constructed to descend from the steps of the Cathedral of St. Paul, sending extreme skaters whooshing down 12 stories to the delight of everyone in attendance.
In the past it has drawn more than 100,000 fans at once, according to Red Bull.
No reason has been given by Red Bull about why it isn't returning to St. Paul, but I happen to know several friends that have made this an annual event to attend with their kids. No doubt they'll be disappointed to learn it won't be returning this winter.
