The Best States to Have a Baby in 2025
We've got new findings from WalletHub that have ranked states (plus DC) from best to worst for having a baby in 2025.
Just like how couples need to take many things into consideration before starting a family, many things were taken into consideration to determine these rankings, too.

Metrics that were used include things like cost (from hospital fees to child care costs), health care accessibility, baby-friendliness, and family-friendliness. All important things to look at!
Coming in as the 5th best state to have a baby right now is Maine. The Cost Rank wasn't great, coming in at number 25, but the Health Care Rank, Baby-Friendliness Rank, and Family-Friendliness Rank were all high.
4th place went to New Hampshire, which ranked highly in all of the featured categories except Baby-Friendliness, where they ranked 45. Oof.
Number 3 is... us! Minnesota! We'll break down our more specific rankings in a second.
2nd place goes to North Dakota, where they ranked highly in all the featured categories except, again, Baby-Friendliness, where they ranked 28.
And the number one state to have a baby right now is Massachusetts. They took the number 1 spot for the Health Care Rank and Family-Friendliness Rank, number 2 for Baby-Friendliness, but the Cost Rank put them at number 43. Yikes, but not surprising.

We did really well across the board except for one of the categories. Both the Health Care Rank and Baby-Friendliness Rank, we came in at number 7.
Family-Friendliness is where we did the best, coming in at number 2.
The one that was the worst for us was the Cost Rank, where we came in at number 23. Not SUPER bad, but not great.
