When it comes to new residents moving here, a new survey says Minnesota was one of the top growth states in the country last year.

Texas might have been the state that more people moved to in 2021 than any other, but the Land of 10,000 Lakes is also still a top destination according to an annual growth state survey by U-Haul.

According to U-Haul, their annual survey provides an interesting take on migration and moving trends, thanks to its network of stores that blankets all 50 U.S. states and 10 Canadian provinces. The survey looked at data from more than 23,000 U-Haul truck- and trailer-sharing locations to provide a comprehensive overview of the places where people were moving to and from in 2021.

Specifically, U-Haul came up with its rankings based on the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks entering a state versus trucks leaving that state in a calendar year.  And in 2021, there were more trucks entering the Lone Star State than any other. Texas placed first on the list, followed by Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina and Arizona.

Meanwhile, here in Minnesota, U-Haul says we're ranked 17th on the list of growth states for 2021. That's a respectable ranking and is up three spots from our 20th place ranking in 2020. Our neighbors to the east in my home state of Wisconsin stayed steady in 13th place, the same rank they achieved in 2020. Iowa came in ranked 27th, falling three places from its 24th place finish in 2020.

So, if Texas is the state more people are moving to, which state is the one most people are moving away from? That would be the Golden State of California, which U-Haul said came in ranked dead last at number 50 on the 2021 growth state list.
