What sweet treats are on your Mt. Rushmore of candy? I'd pick Reece's Peanut Butter Cups, Peanut M&Ms, Kit-Kats, and Snickers. None of those are Minnesota's official state candy. What about Starbursts or Skittles? Nope and Nope.

Minnesota's official state candy is made right here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes which makes sense, but it's not a candy that would make most people's Mt. Rushmore of treats.

The average American eats 8 pounds of candy each year and everyone has their favorite. Below you'll see the most popular in the country and which candy is the official sweet treat of Minnesota.

“The U.S. just can’t seem to make up its mind about which classic American chocolate treat it prefers—the hard candy-coated pieces you can eat by the handful or the delicious, creamy peanut butter sandwiched between layers of milk chocolate”

What Is Minnesota's Official State Candy?

Minnesota State Representatives, Bud Nornes and Roxann Dagget, authored a bill in 1997 to name an official state candy.

They wisely chose a candy made in Minnesota, but not this one...

The two representatives chose to make licorice the state's official candy.

Wiley Wallaby Licorice is made at Kenny's Candy & Confections in Perham, MN. They make about 300,000 pounds of it each week!

It's not clear if Wiley's was the inspiration behind naming licorice the state candy, but I can't think of any other reason.
