Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) -  Nearly 20 more names have been added to the Rochester area 100-mph club.

The mega speeders were clocked at 100 mph or faster between early March and mid-June.

The top two speeders were caught about the same time in different areas on June 4th.  And both are teenagers.

The top speed recorded during the three-month period was 117 mph. A state trooper clocked a vehicle driven by 18-year-old Masoud Ahmed of Rochester at 117 mph in the 65 mph zone of westbound Highway 14 near 7th St NW around 11:00 pm June 4th. Ahmed told the trooper he was in a hurry because his “mom wanted him home.”

Second on the latest list is another Rochester teenager who was caught driving 109 mph in a 65 mph zone on Highway around 10:45 pm on June 4th. According to the citation, 16-year-old Caleb Ofstedahl told the trooper who pulled him over it was a new car and he “wanted to see how fast it would go.

Third on the list is 23-year-old Diego Lopez of Rochester who was driving a motorcycle that a state trooper clocked at 106 mph in the 55 mph zone in the 2400 block of 75th St NW around 3:00 pm on April 10th.

A county deputy clocked a car that was doing 105 mph in the 65 mph zone on Highway 52 in SW Rochester around 7:30 pm on April 14th. Ticketed was 51-year-old Matthew Robbins of Rochester. He pleaded guilty to driving 94 mph as part of a plea agreement.

A Rochester teenager was clocked at 105 mph on Highway 52 near the 19th St overpass around 10:30 pm June 22nd. He continued speeding until he exited at 2nd St SW. The driver - 18-year-old Mohamed Alfalasi - told the trooper “He had some confusion on whether or not his vehicle was in kilometers/hour or mph.” He was ticketed for driving 105 mph in a 60 mph zone.

A La Crosse man was clocked at 104 mph in the 65 mph zone on Highway 52 in the Oronoco area around 1:30 pm on April 7th. Ticketed for speeding was 28-year-old Alexander Duresky.

Also clocked at 104 mph was 39-year-old Raymond Duque of Rochester. He was caught speeding on Highway 14 around 8:00 am on March 7th.

Also of note:

  • A Rochester teenager was caught driving 80 mph in downtown Rochester. A city police officer clocked 18-year-old Muhyadin Ali at 80 mph in the 30 mph zone on S. Broadway near the 6th St intersection around 1:00 am on April 9th.
  • 21-year-old Alexys Villanueva of Plainview was charged with speeding and reckless driving after being clocked at 63 mph in the 30 mph zone on S. Broadway near the 9th St intersection on April 8th

There continued to be a large number of motorists caught driving at +80 and +90 mph over the past few months.

Also, more and more drivers are being caught using their cell phones while behind the wheel.

Mega-speeders are being caught all over Minnesota, a phenomenon that began in the early months of the pandemic when many major roads were nearly empty of traffic.

The Minnesota Dept. of Public Safety has announced Border-to-Border (B2B) Speed Enforcement in southeast Minnesota Friday, July 1 on Highways 14 and 19.
