Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Minnesota Department of Health today reported eight coronavirus related deaths and one involved a Rochester area resident.

Officials say the Olmsted County resident who died after contracting the viral infection was an individual in their early 90s. There have now been 27 coronavirus related deaths in Olmsted County since the start of the pandemic.

State health officials today reported 1099 new COVID-19 infections that were detected by the over 29,400 tests that were completed on Thursday. It marked the first time Minnesota has reported over 1000 new cases in a single day, while the test total was the second-highest daily count, which resulted in a positivity rate of only about 3.4-percent. 17 of the new cases were in Olmsted County, where the positivity rate was 3.8-percent on Thursday.

After slowly falling for about a week the number of coronavirus related hospitalizations has now been edging higher for several days. State health officials say 250 people are currently hospitalized due to COVID-19 and 136 of the patients are being treated in intensive care units.
