[Opinion] One Reason To Avoid Hurts Donuts When They Visit Rochester
Hurts Donut is bringing its "Emergency Donut Vehicle" to the Miracle Mile Shopping Center in Rochester this Saturday (October 24th). I know a lot of people are excited to sample their treats, but I'm going to give you one reason why you shouldn't - at least not now.
We're in the middle of a pandemic. No, I'm not worried about you catching COVID-19 while waiting in line. I'm worried about our local businesses. I'm sure the folks from Hurts Donuts are great people, and I'm sure their donuts are amazing, but they're going to take your money with them back to Cedar Falls, Iowa. Rochester businesses are struggling right now and desperately need your support. If you want donuts, consider visiting a bakery in our area. If you want breakfast, hit up one of our amazing restaurants.
CNBC published a story last month citing data from Yelp that showed how rough things are across the country. Their report showed 97,966 small businesses have closed permanently because of the pandemic. Below is the list of businesses in Rochester that have closed in 2020. Stores of all kinds from national chains to small restaurants have closed for a variety of reasons and sadly the list will probably continue to grow.
Consider shopping local when you get the chance to protect our shops and restaurants. 1 in 3 people in Olmsted County is employed by a small business and your support makes their paycheck possible.
