The majority of Minnesotans want to send kids back to school according to a Minnesota Department of Education poll. When asked if they "would feel comfortable sending their student(s) back to a classroom this fall," 64 percent said yes, 11 percent said no and 24 percent were unsure. State officials are expected to announce a plan for the fall within the next two weeks. If schools reopen, back to school shopping will be a little different this year.

Deloitte has conducted a back-to-school survey for more than 10-years that examines the spending patterns of parents across the country. Their survey found that parents plan to spend about the same as they did last year on school supplies but what they buy will be different.  According to Deloitte, "Driven by anxiety, parents are shifting their purchasing behavior with the new realities of schooling—40% said they are planning to buy fewer traditional back-to-school supplies this year as they invest in digital resources to supplement their children’s education. Nonetheless, the average spend is relatively flat."

Their data shows parents will spend a combined $28.1 billion on back to school supplies, but the amount spent on clothes and traditional school supplies will decrease as parents invest more in technology and COVID related hygiene products like hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes.
