Sneaking Off in Her Pajamas: How a Mayo Clinic Piano Changed Rachel Platten’s Life
Every year, Mayo Clinic throws a massive celebration to honor the incredible healthcare workers and staff who keep the hospital running.
Tens of thousands of employees get the chance to step away from their demanding roles to enjoy food, play games, win prizes, and catch some live music. This year’s staff appreciation event was held in downtown Rochester and at Saint Marys Hospital, featuring food from dozens of local spots and a special performance from pop star Rachel Platten.

Platten is best known for her hit "Fight Song," a track that has become a global anthem of hope, resilience, and strength for patients, families, and medical staff navigating tough battles.
Pop Star Reveals Her Biggest Hit Was Played for the Very First Time at Mayo Clinic

Years ago, Rachel was in Rochester with her husband while her father-in-law was receiving care at Mayo Clinic. During what she described as a "scary time" for the family, they spent endless hours inside the hospital.
One day, feeling the weight of it all, the up-and-coming singer snuck off to get a moment to herself. Wandering the halls in her pajamas, she stumbled upon the grand piano sitting in the Landow Atrium of the Gonda Building.
At the time, she was working on a song that wasn't quite finished yet. She sat down at the keys and began playing the unfinished piece. It was the very first time Rachel Platten played "Fight Song" in public.
She watched the emotional reactions of the patients and staff that stopped to listen, realized just how powerful that song truly was, and knew she had to finish the song.
Returning to Rochester to headline the staff appreciation bash wasn't just another tour stop for Platten. It was a full-circle moment for a song born in the quiet halls of Mayo Clinic that continues to lift up millions of people around the world.
