We Minnesotans love to use our long winters to our advantage. Skiing, snowboarding, hockey, and ice fishing are good examples.

Another sport that got its start because of cold winters is curling. Minnesota has become a curling hot spot with plenty of Minnesotans representing Team USA in past Olympics and the upcoming Olympics in Milan.

Fun fact: Curling started in Scotland in the early 1500s. That's a long time ago! Now, there are curling clubs all over the world, including one in Minnesota that's the largest curling club in the US.

The Largest Curling Club in the US

The St. Paul Curling Club holds the honor of being the largest curling club in the US. The curling club that eventually became the St. Paul Curling Club started way back in 1885.

They held their first curling match on Christmas Day of 1885 on the Mississippi River near Raspberry Island.

St. Paul Curling Club opened their indoor location at 470 Selby Ave. in 1912, and it's been located there ever since.

St. Paul Curling Club is the Largest Curling Club in the US

They host competitions that include people from all around the world, and right now they have over 1,200 members.

I've tried curling once. It wasn't at the St. Paul Curling Club, and it was a short lesson outside, but I tried it! I would definitely do it again (I'd be curious to try it out indoors), but dang, it's harder than it looks!

If you've never tried curling, I'd recommend trying it out. As the person pushing the stone, you have to think about so many different things all in one movement. It's cool!
