Last week, we posted a story on our website about a local lawmaker who was accusing Rochester officials of deliberately creating traffic congestion. If some of the stop lights in town are any indication, maybe that lawmaker is right!

I hate stop lights! Loathe them! Way too often, I find myself getting stopped at one so that a lone car can get through an intersection. Or worse yet, I get stopped at one where NO cars are! I lose a minute of my day when I only really needed to lose a few seconds, at most. Over the course of months, that adds up to hours of lost time sitting at worthless stop lights!

But which lights in town are the most worthless? I’ve started a list here of three of my most worthless stop lights in Rochester. Living in the Northeast part of town, and working downtown, my list is comprised mainly of lights in those areas.

I’m sure there are others, and I’d love to hear your nominations for lights you think are as worthless, or even more worthless, than these. Heck, if we get enough response, I’ll put another story together sharing yours!

  • 11th Avenue NE & 10th Street NE

I understand, in theory, why a stop light would be here. It's near a school and children cross the street there. However, there are really only two times a day when that happens - before and after school. Here's a thought. How about having the stop light run as normal during those times and then have it flash yellow on 11th Avenue NE and red on 10th Street NE during non-crossing times, so it serves basically as a stop sign to those on 10th Street NE most of the time?

  • South Broadway and 3rd Street South

Let's face it, there are too many lights on Broadway going through downtown. And a few of them don't really need to be there. Case in point? How about the light on South Broadway and 3rd Street South? To the west, 3rd Street runs one-way, moving away from Broadway into the Historic Third Street district. To the east? Well, that's just a parking lot and parking garage that actually has another exit out onto 2nd Street South Add to that, there are lights one block north and south of this one and it all adds up to a worthless stop light!

  • South Broadway and 1st Street South

An even more worthless stop light on Broadway would have to be the one on South Broadway and 1st Street South. There is a divider between the southbound and northbound lanes, so no cars can make a left turn in any direction in that intersection. To the west is the large building housing the Shoppes at University Square and the University of Minnesota - Rochester. The road doesn't even go to the west! The light is basically for pedestrians, even though there are intersections with stop lights one block north and south where pedestrians can cross, as well as a skyway almost directly above the lights. And, it sounds like a second skyway may be there once that area to the north of this light is developed. This light does nothing but cause unnecessary traffic congestion on Broadway!
