We are just days away from the holiday when we stock up on candy for the year! We have my step son this year, and are super excited to take him door to door, but not excited about what that means for his teeth.

My dentist has already put the hammer down on ME, saying I need to avoid things like taffy or anything else sticky and hard to chew. I have super sensitive teeth with soft enamel (yay). That means I'm susceptible to cavities. Because I know how brutal cavities can be, the last thing I want to do is put little man through that. I found some tips to help parents save their kiddos' teeth.

  1. Avoid Caramel... Or any sticky candy for that matter - ESPECIALLY if your kids have any fillings. The caramel sticks to teeth and is most likely to give you cavities too. I know, it's hard to hear!! Who doesn't love a giant caramel apple?
  2. Water before AND after you go trick or treating. Before will keep them full so they can't eat as much, and after will rinse the sugar from their teeth. Also, if your kid doesn't floss yet, Halloween night would be the perfect time to get on that.
  3. Be the mean parent that says "no candy until after dinner!" That's a hard one to stick to, but it'll help keep them from overeating candy, plus eating helps produce saliva to wash the sugar away.

Good luck parents, and Happy Halloween! :)
