In the past week we've reported on social media threats made against Rochester by a creepy clown and clown costume sales skyrocketing but not all clowns are creepy, right?

The word 'clown' first appeared in the English language back in the 1500s. According to Wikipedia, the origin of the word is uncertain, perhaps from a Scandinavian word cognate with clumsy. The classic clown character that we all know became a thing in the 1800s.

Clowns have been around for a long time. During the majority of that time they've entertained people - not creeped them out.  As a kid I enjoyed watching Bozo the Clown and Ronald McDonald was always cool with me. Both made MY list of 'most famous' clowns. See my top 5 below and let me know who I missed in the comment section.
