We've all heard the expression "it's so hot out you could fry an egg on the sidewalk" but have you ever actually tried to do it?  Yesterday it was pretty hot so I thought I'd give it a try.  I chose to use the side of the street to make clean-up easier. Here's what happened:

So how hot does it need to be?

Well according to livescience.com:

"Bill Nye the Science Guy tested egg-frying a couple years ago, and found the minimum temperature to cook an egg was 130 degrees Fahrenheit , but that it took 20 minutes at that relatively low temperature. “So indeed, it can be hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk,” he writes.

But this article from the Library of Congress sites that the hottest of sidewalks only heat up to 145°F and once you crack the egg onto the sidewalk, the egg yolk cools the sidewalk killing your chances of cooking it.

What do you think - Is it possible to fry an egg on a sidewalk?  If you want to try it for yourself - Saturday will be a good day for this experiment.  Heat index readings on Saturday will be between 95° and 100°
