Rochester is at a wonderful 3% unemployment rate, so it seems like there is ALWAYS someone hiring. If you are on the search for a new job, here are the questions to expect at your interview.

I recently discovered an awesome job seeking/posting app, called Zip Recruiter. Since signing up for the app, I've received some stellar advice from them so I thought I'd share!

  • Why Did You Leave Your Last Job?

I hate this question. The best advice I could give you, is don't ever throw a previous employer under the bus. Interviews and dates are entirely too similar right? Isn't it a big red flag when the person you're on a date with talks bad about their ex? The same goes for a previous employer.

This is what Zip Recruiter recommends: "Instead of blaming your old boss and unfair past events for your departure, discuss new opportunities you are hoping to take advantage of with a fresh start. Use this question as an opportunity to highlight your drive and ambition with some of these starters, “I’m looking for a growth opportunity,” “I had learned everything I could in my last role,” “I need a new challenge."'

  • What's Your Greatest Weakness?

Not that I think I'm a pro when it comes to interviews, or that I really want to give you ALL my answers, BUT I figured why not give you my advice. Take it or leave it ;) ... I always answer this question with a positive weakness. Something that can be viewed as a strength too. Like, I'm a perfectionist. I won't quit until it's to my standards.

Ziip Recruiter's advice: "If you frame your weakness as an experience you are learning from, you’ll stand out as a thoughtful candidate."

  • What is Your Expected Salary?

The awkward money question, you gotta love it! Don't give an outrageous amount, but don't settle for something ridiculous. Do research and figure out the money you need to live, and what people in that position typically make and you'll be just fine.
