Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - One day after Rochester police announced a major drug investigation comes word of another bust involving a significant amount of methamphetamine.

This happened as a result of a sharp-eyed Olmsted County deputy. Olmsted County.

Sheriff’s Office Capt. Scott Behrns says the deputy was driving on Broadway near downtown Rochester around 2:30 AM Wednesday when he spotted a car stopped in the middle of the road and a bicyclist near the driver’s side window. The deputy saw what appeared to be a drug transaction and decided to check it out. The bicyclist rode off and the car began driving away.

The deputy stopped the vehicle and during a search of the driver, found some suspected meth. The vehicle was searched and the deputy found a total of 1.5 pounds of methamphetamine and $16,000 in cash. The driver - identified as 45-year-old Panh Thavong - was arrested.

Behrns says investigators later executed search warrants at a local motel and two residences. Some vehicles were also searched. The searches resulted in the discovery of another 1.5 pounds of meth and $40,000 in cash. Behrns says the meth had a wholesale street value of $28,000.

The earlier bust involved the seizure of 5 pounds of meth.
