North Dakota's best small town is New Salem, which is nearly in the middle of the state, just a little to the west. It's part of the Bismark metro area and has a population of 973.

Good Housekeeping says New Salem is a quiet community with great museums that honor the town's past. They're also home to The World's Largest Holstein Cow landmark.

Best Small Town in South Dakota

South Dakota's best small town is Deadwood, which is on the far west side of the state. It has a population of about 1,200 and has a big history in the gold rush.

They have great re-enactments of their history but also "modern-day fun for families" according to Good Housekeeping.

Iowa's best small town is Winterset, which is just southwest of Des Moines and has a population of 5,353.

It's described as "a picturesque town with down-home charm". It also is the home of John Wayne and they have a museum in honor of him.

Wisconsin's best small town is Hayward, which is on the northwest side of the state with a population of 2,318.

As for the best small town in Minnesota, that would be Ely, way up on the northeast side of the state. Ely is such a pretty town but it's especially beautiful with the leaves changing colors.
