Council Approves Hiring of Private Firm to Run Mayo Civic Center
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - Management of the Mayo Civic Center will likely be under a non-profit entity within about a year.
The Rochester City Council Monday unanimously approved the hiring of an entity to take over the day-to-day operations and management of both the MCC and the Experience Rochester organization. City Administrator Steve Rymer told the council his goal is to have the new entity ready to assume control Jan. 1, 2020.
The council will also appoint a board of directors that will oversee the entity.
The main goal of Monday’s decision is to give the council more public scrutiny of the MCC’s operations and finances and create more transparency.
One item that is expected to be included in the contract with the entity will be a requirement to make annual contributions to its operating and capital budget.
Rymer also told the council the city will do all it can to accommodate workers affected by the move.
Also Monday, the council approved a staff request to seek proposals for the short-term management of the Chateau Theater. The plan is to create activity at the Chateau while the city develops a long-term plan for the historic building, which could take 3-5 years.
