The pandemic has forced some changes to Rochester's "Here Comes Santa Claus" event, but it is still scheduled for later this month. The annual event typically features Santa being rescued by the Rochester Fire Department from the top of the Old City Hall building, live entertainment, and the lighting of the tree at the Peace Plaza. This year will include activities that allow for social distancing like a "12 days of Magic" scavenger hunt and a drive-thru parade featuring decorations, lights, and appearances by Santa Claus. Santa is planning a surprise visit to town prior to the scavenger hunt to deliver clues.

The executive director of the Rochester Downtown Alliance, Holly Masek, said: “We’re excited to bring some joy and magic to the community this November. We hope this new take on Here Comes Santa Claus gives everyone a safe way to celebrate with their families."

Another focus of the RDA this holiday season will be "Shop Small on Saturdays". Each Saturday from November 28 through December 19. On their website, the RDA explains the importance of supporting our local shops, "Small Business Saturday creates jobs, boosts the economy and preserves neighborhoods in downtown Rochester and across the country. In 2019, the 10th Annual Small Business Saturday hit a record high with an estimated $19.6 billion in reported spending, according to an American Express consumer insights survey."
