The Rochester Art Ensemble and Rochester Art Center have teamed up to present Day of the Dead celebrations that are live, virtual, and free.

On Halloween day you'll be able to stop by the Mayo Civic Center to pick up a free art kit between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The following Saturday an artist from the Rochester Art Ensemble will host a virtual demonstration showing you how to use the supplies found in the kit. A Day of the Dead Poetry Slam will take place online on Saturday, November 7th, and will feature "thirteen incredible poets reading their original work and poems by immortal poets who have passed on."

A press release from the Rochester Arts Center explains Day of the Dead "originated in ancient Mesoamerica (Mexico and northern Central America) where indigenous groups, including Aztec, Maya, and Toltec, had specific times when they commemorated
their loved ones who had passed away. Certain months were dedicated to remembering the departed, based on whether the deceased was an adult or a child. After the arrival of the Spanish, this ritual of commemorating the dead was intertwined with two Spanish holidays: All Saints Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls Day (Nov. 2). Día de los Muertos is often celebrated on Nov. 1 as a day to remember children who have passed away, and on Nov. 2 to honor adults."
