If you live in Minnesota, you know Top the Tater isn't just a chip dip. Nothing else compares to what's inside that green-and-white tub.

It’s a staple at backyard BBQs, football watch parties, and office potlucks. People even buy tubs of it specifically for road trips, and anyone who moves out of state usually ends up begging family to ship it to them. Now, the unofficial state dip just got the ultimate fair food makeover.

What Is Deep-Fried Top the Tater and Where to Find It

If you're heading to the Steele County Free Fair in Owatonna this week, hunt down the All Family Concessions booth.

They take that signature sour cream and onion dip, pack it inside a crust made from crushed potato chips, and drop it in the fryer. It's served hot and crispy on the outside with the warm and gooey dip in the center.

You can get it two different ways:

  • Original Chive & Onion: The classic flavor everyone grew up on.
  • Zesty Buffalo: A spicier option if you want some heat.

Both versions come with sweet chili sauce on the side for dipping.

The Steele County Free Fair is already one of the biggest summer events around, but this delicious treat makes Owatonna a mandatory stop this week.

If you're heading out, the fair actually launched a new mobile app this year to improve your experience. It includes a full food vendor map, info on exhibits, attractions, and entertainment and allows you to plan your day before you arrive.
