Discount Chain with 100+ Minnesota Locations Plans To Close 1,000 Stores
It's been a month of bad news about popular national chains, with several announcing closures. Outback Steakhouse is shutting down 40 locations, Macy's is closing 150 stores, and today there's news about a major discount chain planning to close 1,000 stores throughout the county.
This unfortunate news means that many people will lose their jobs, and certain small towns might lose their main grocery store.
As a result of this review, we plan on closing approximately 600 Family Dollar stores in the first half of fiscal 2024. Additionally, approximately 370 Family Dollar and 30 Dollar Tree stores will close over the next several years at the end of each store’s current lease term.
We always hit up the Dollar Tree for movie-night candy, but you can find everything from health and beauty items, food, party supplies, seasonal decorations, housewares, glassware, dinnerware, cleaning supplies, toys, gifts, stationery, craft supplies, electronics, pet supplies, and books at Dollar Tree and Family Dollar.
Some Dollar Tree stores also carry frozen foods and dairy products such as milk, eggs, pizza, ice cream, and frozen dinners.
According to Statista, Dollar Tree runs "around 16,340 stores across the United States and Canada, with a fairly even distribution between their two brands, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree."
How Many Dollar Trees and Family Dollars Are In Minnesota?
Family Dollar stores operate in 48 communities in Minnesota, and there are 107 Dollar Trees scattered throughout the state.
The company says a recent review of current market conditions, individual store performance, and other factors has resulted in the decision to close 1,000 locations.
Which Stores Are Closing?
Dollar Tree hasn't shared the list of stores facing closure yet. However, in an earnings call, they made it clear to investors that the closures won't be concentrated in any specific regions. We'll provide updates when they become available.
