It's not the state you would expect to be number one on the list, but the latest study says it is true.

Our friends at Wallet Hub dove into their latest study to find which state was the best for doctors. Minnesota came in at number two on the list, while Montana was number one.

Despite Minnesota being home to one of the most highly thought-after hospitals in the world in Rochester's Mayo Clinic, Montana still came in at #1.

So, what was the difference maker that set Montana away from the rest of the pack? Montana scored just over 2 points ahead of Minnesota in Wallet Hub's score that looked across 19 key metrics to find out which state was the best for doctors.

In order to help doctors decide where to practice, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 19 key metrics. Our data set ranges from the average annual wage of physicians to hospitals per capita to the quality of the public hospital system.

Montana was rated #4 for medical environment, and 24th for opportunity and competition.

Wallet Hub notes that doctors are among the highest-paid professionals in the country, but many doctors don't start out wealthy because of the debt they acquire for schooling.

They are among the highest-paid and most educated professionals in the U.S. In fact, many medical jobs were among the highest-paying of 2020, with general physicians having a mean salary of $196,490 per year. The high salary makes sense, given the importance of their life-saving work and the struggles that come with life in the medical profession. However, doctors don’t start out wealthy. The average medical-school debt is around $215,000.

I guess #2 is nothing to complain about, but I'll still consider it a SNUB for Minnesota. The rest midwest did very well in the overall rankings, with, Wisconsin #4, North Dakota #7, and Iowa #10. South Dakota came in at #14.
