Why Minnesota is Consistently One of the Best States for Working Moms
Around Mother's Day every year, WalletHub comes out with their annual rankings of the best states for working moms. Each year, Minnesota ranks really high on the list. We're in the top 10 every time.
We've written about our ranking every year since 2019, except for the past two years, so we've got quite a bit of past data to go off of. I wanted to figure out why we keep ranking as one of the best states for working moms.

Minnesota is One of the Best States for Working Moms in 2026
Before we get into looking at past data, let's take a look at where we ranked for 2026.
Minnesota ranked as the 7th best state for working moms this year, which is awesome! We ranked best in the 'Professional Opportunities Rank' category.
The state that took the number one spot, though, is Connecticut. They always rank highly on this list, too.
Why Minnesota is One of the Best States for Working Moms
Ok, now let's get into why Minnesota always ranks so highly as one of the best states for working moms.

In 2019, we also ranked 7th. Our best categories were Median Women’s Salary and Pediatricians per Capita. That year, we also ranked low in Female Unemployment Rate.
In 2020, we hopped to 2nd place. Unfortunately, why we ranked so highly wasn't documented.
In 2021, we ranked 5th. We actually ranked as the best state in the Child Care category that year, and 3rd in the Professional Opportunities category.
In 2022, we ranked 4th. Our best categories that year were Median Women's Salary, Quality of Day Care, and we had one of the lowest percentages of Single-Mom Families in Poverty.
And the last year that we have documented was 2023, where we ranked 6th. We were back on top in the Child Care category that year and we also ranked highly in the Professional Opportunities category.
Based on ALL of that, it seems to me the reason why Minnesota is consistently a great place for working moms is because of the professional opportunities offered to working moms and the ability for working moms to still hold a good job and get paid well, even while holding down the demanding job of being a mom.
