Sadly retail theft continues to rise across the country and Iowa is no exception to that. In fact, the National Retail Federation predicts that, overall, billions of dollars have been lost to retail theft.

Retail Theft is a '$100 Billion Problem'

In a post from the National Retail Federation, they say that retail theft has become a "nearly $100 billion problem, and there’s evidence the problem is growing."

While I seriously enjoy having access to self-checkouts everywhere I shop, I do believe that those may have contributed quite a bit to the increase in retail theft.

I would guess that's why we see so many cameras around the self-checkout area and why there's almost always an employee standing guard at the self-checkout area. There are plenty of stores now that have a camera facing you at the checkout and also above you watching you scan.

Walmart would be one of those places taking lots of precautions to try and combat retail theft. There are a lot of different items stolen from Walmarts in Iowa and other stores as well. Thanks to Business Insider we have the most commonly stolen items.

The worst part about this list is that so many items are basic necessities. Lots of people go to the store and buy things like laundry detergent without thinking too much about it. But that's a very commonly stolen item.
