Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A well-known Rochester businessman and philanthropist has died.

The family of Ed Pompeian says he died unexpectedly Saturday. He was 67.

Pompeian underwent a life-saving kidney transplant (his mother was the donor) in 1973. That experience ultimately led to his founding of Rochester’s Gift of Life Transplant House in 1984 and he was honored for his work in 1984.

Pompeian is survived by his wife Jayne, four children and other family members.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 pm Wednesday in the chapel and one hour prior to Thursday’s service.
