
These are Now the Safest Cities in Southern Minnesota for 2025
A 2025 study from Safewise has revealed the safest cities all around Minnesota. Six of the top 20 are found in southern Minnesota. That's great news for us!
As Minnesota Now writes, all of the Minnesota cities that made the top 20 show "impressive strides in public safety, with no city reporting more than one violent crime per 1,000 residents."
Safewise not only looked at the violent crime rate when putting together the ranking, they looked at the property crime rate as well.

Also worthy of now, Minnesota Now writes that the safest city in Minnesota has been ranked at the number one spot for three years in a row now. That's impressive!

Southern Minnesota's Safest Cities
As for southern Minnesota specifically, like I mentioned earlier, we have six of the 20 safest cities in the state.

Coming in at number 20 overall, number 6 for southern Minnesota, is St. James.
Violent crime rate per 1,000 people: 0.4
Property crime rate per 1,000 people: 6.9
Next, at number 18 overall, number 5 for our area, is Lake City.
Violent crime rate per 1,000 people: 0.4
Property crime rate per 1,000 people: 6.9
At number 11 overall, number 4 for southern Minnesota, is New Prague.
Violent crime rate per 1,000 people: 0.6
Property crime rate per 1,000 people: 4.0
New Ulm comes in at number 9 overall, number 3 for southern Minnesota.
Violent crime rate per 1,000 people: 0.3
Property crime rate per 1,000 people: 5.1
Up next, at number 6 overall and number 2 for our area is Lonsdale.

Property crime rate per 1,000 people: 2.6
And rounding out the list, the number 5 safest city in Minnesota and the safest in southern Minnesota is La Crescent.
