Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Mayor Ardell Brede could extend a job offer to one of the three finalists for Rochester Police Chief later today, but it may be days or even weeks before there is an official announcement.

The process used to identify the best candidate for succeeding retired Chief Roger Peterson will be completed this afternoon when the Rochester Police Civil Service Commission meets and officially certifies the background checks performed on the three finalists: Prior Lake Police Chief Mark Elliot, Metro Transit Police Captain James Franklin, and Major Roy Alston of the Dallas Police Department.

That will clear the way for the mayor to identify the person he wishes to succeed longtime Chief Roger Peterson, who officially retired late last month after nearly 20-years in the leadership position. Mayor Brede says, unfortunately, that does not mean he will be able to publicly name the person chosen for the job. He expects that will have to wait for the top candidate to accept the job offer, negotiate the terms of his employment, and then complete a psychological and medical exam.

Brede says it’s unclear when he will be able to make the official announcement and he says it’s unlikely the new police chief will be able to report for work in Rochester until next month, at the earliest.
