According to the Star Tribune, the three-time all-star closer, is expected to require surgery because of a torn labrum and rotator cuff problems.

Perkins hasn’t stepped foot on the diamond since April 10th, pitching in only two games this season...

Since being placed on the disabled list that week, he's had plenty of setbacks.

Kevin Jepsen, who was acquired from Tampa Bay last season and filled-in nicely when Perkins first showed signs of struggling late in the year, took over in the closer’s role once Perkins was put on the DL.  But ever since he was given the job, he has struggled mightily in the role to say the least.  He was recently removed from his closing duties in favor of the duo of Brandon Kintzler and Fernando Abad.

This is the third straight year in which injuries have ruined Perkins’ season.

The 33-year old Perkins is making $6.3 million this year and is owed another $6.5 million next season.

It will be interesting to see where the club goes from here after this devastating news, since all star closers don't just grow on trees.  The Twins have recorded just 8 saves this season, which ranks dead last in baseball...
