I'll be the first to admit that I've been guilty of texting and driving before.  These days I'll either put my phone in the console of my car, or bury it deep into my coat pocket so I can't reach it if it goes off.  More often than not I'll make sure the vibration setting is turned off and the volume is real low so I don't even THINK about checking my phone for texts.
