Cat cafes are all the rage and have been for a little while. We have a few around Minnesota, but it's time we get one in Rochester.

What is a Cat Cafe?

A cat cafe is a coffee shop with cats! Ok, there's a bit more to it than that.

It's like your usual coffee shop where you can order your favorite caffeinated drinks, but there's also an area in the cafe where you can go hang out with adoptable cats from a local animal humane society.

The cat area and the cafe area are totally separated by a wall, but the wall is typically mostly glass, so you can at least see the cats even if you aren't going into the room.

If you want to go hang out with the cats, you need to schedule a time in advance, and it costs just a bit extra. Usually, the cost is between $8 and $10, and it typically gets you an hour in the cat room. You get to bring your coffee in an everything and just spend some quality time with some furry, adoptable friends.

It's time we get a cat cafe in Rochester!

We Need a Cat Cafe in Rochester, MN

On the Spotted in Rochester Facebook group, someone named Grace recently brought up the fact that we need a cat cafe in town, which is what got me thinking about this.

Grace brought up some really great reasons as to why we need one:

  • Paws and Claws and Camp Companion are near capacity.
  • All of the people traveling to Rochester for Mayo are leaving their pets at home and may feel homesick. A cat cafe could be a wonderful escape for them.
  • It gives the adoptable cats a chance to socialize with other cats and people.

I second all of that. No lie, I've thought about how cool it would be to open a cat cafe myself, but I wouldn't even know where to start or how to get all of the money to start the business. (Am I the only one who has random entrepreneurial ideas?)

Anyway, while there's no cat cafe coming to Rochester at the moment, it would be amazing if one came soon! Maybe this will give someone the motivation to do it.
