Warning for Rochester Residents with Elderly Family Members or Friends
The next 24-36 hours could be deadly for elderly members of our community.
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for the entire 106.9 KROC listening area. Several inches of heavy wet snow is expected to accumulate by tomorrow afternoon.
Snow shoveling is a known trigger for heart attacks which can be fatal. Approximately 100 people die in the U.S. each year after suffering heart attacks while shoveling - Two Rochester residents died earlier this year.
Cardiologist Barry Franklin says anyone over the age of 55 should NOT shovel. Data published in this BBC article found that when healthy young men shoveled snow, their heart rate and blood pressure increased more than when they exercised on a treadmill. Franklin says, "Combine this with cold air, which causes arteries to constrict and decrease blood supply, you have a perfect storm for a heart attack."
Please consider clearing sidewalks and driveways for your elderly family members, friends and neighbors.
