I had a friend tell me they had a bunch of mosquitos at a state park a couple of weeks ago. My husband and I were at a friend's house for a bonfire last weekend and we had a bunch, too.

Easy Ways to Prevent Mosquitos

There are a few easy ways to prevent mosquitos from ruining your backyard fun this summer. One of those is the color that you wear, but we'll get into those specifics in a second.

An obvious tip is to spray bug spray on your clothes. That will definitely help keep the mosquitos at bay.

Another option is to burn a citronella candle and/or use one of those diffusers that keep away mosquitos. I have one of those and the brand we have is Thermacell but there are plenty of others out there.

There are also lots of plants that are natural mosquito repellants. So while you're out plant shopping for your backyard, consider adding these to your yard (I got this list from Garden Design):

Colors You Should Avoid Wearing to Prevent Mosquitos

Now, let's get into the colors you should avoid wearing to prevent mosquitos from swarming you this summer.

According to the pest control company Terminix, mosquitos are generally attracted to dark colors. They write that the dark colors could "block a mosquito's view of the horizon" therefore telling the mosquito there might be something tasty there.

More specifically, though, mosquitos seem to love red and orange. The thought is that "human skin tones register as a strong red-orange hue" to mosquitos so if you wear red or orange you're just adding to the problem.

So what colors SHOULD you wear instead?

Colors that Mosquitos Could Care Less About

Terminix says that research done at the University of Washington suggests that mosquitos "typically ignore white, green and blue."

So if you're heading into the great outdoors, consider white, green, or blue attire to prevent mosquitos as much as possible.
